Effectiveness of BASIC Parenting Programme with Children at risk of developing ADHD.- Dr. Karen Jones
In April I was awarded my Ph.D. which reported on the effectiveness of the Incredible Years Basic Parenting Programme with a sub-set of families of pre-school children from the main Sure Start sample who were at risk of developing ADHD as well as conduct problems. The results demonstrated statistical and clinically significant reductions in child ADHD symptoms, as well as significant improvements in positive parenting. These improvements were maintained for at least twelve months.

Adapting Dyadic Parent-child Interaction Coding System (DPICS) for use with children between the 1-3 years old for use with the evaluation of the Toddler Parenting Programme.
I am also part of the team investigating the new Toddler Parenting Programme alongside N. Griffith, who is evaluating the programme for her Ph.D. My main role, so far, has been to adapt the Dyadic Parent-child Interaction Coding System (DPICS) for use with children between aged between one and three years. As well as adding examples of parent-child interaction to reflect limited and varied child language, four new categories have been included to assess parental strategies to promote their child's language development. In Phase one we visited families in six areas across North/Mid Wales to collect baseline measures, which included interview, questionnaire, and direct observation. It is exciting to be conducting the first ever evaluation of the new Incredible Years Toddler Programme and I look forward to analysing the data. For a more in-depth summary of this research see the "Evaluating the new Toddler Parenting Programme across Wales" article.
Supporting other researchers outside of Wales delivering training courses in Dyadic Parent-child Interaction Coding System (DPICS).
Dr. T. Bywater and I delivered two five-day training courses for researchers on using the DPICS. In May we we trained at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, in preparation for their forthcoming evaluation of the Incredible Years Parenting Programme for children at risk of developing conduct problems. For a more in-depth summary of this research see the "Archways" article.
In June and July we trained the team in Portugal for their forthcoming evaluation of the BASIC Parenting Programme in Portugal and their study of children with ADHD and CD type problems. For more information about this research see the British Council article.

Upcoming Research
Following a successful small grant application to the North Wales Research Committee, we have funds to conduct a small-scale evaluation of the Incredible Years BASIC Parenting Programme with nursery and creche staff. We are hoping to recruit children aged between two and three years, and their nursery carers from six Flying Start areas in Gwynedd and are currently negotiating with local services about this.
Dr. K. Jones as Lead Applicant, Rhys Wyn Parri, Head of Lifelong Learning Services, Gwynedd Council, Prof. J. Hutchings and Dr. T. Bywater as Co-applicants.
